DWJD! Devotions Week 1

You have heard about WWJD? what would Jesus do? This is a great question but in the 21st century my thoughts of what Jesus would do are to subjective and open to my own interpretation. Over the next six weeks in STOMP we will be studying DWJD! or Do What Jesus Did! The true test of our faith anad love for God is found in our obedience to what he says. Each week we will look at what Jesus did and then try to find ways to do those things in a 21st century school.

Who is My Neighbor?

Day 1
The Twenty-First Time Lyrics Monk & Neagle Song Words
Single Song Words by Artist / Band : Monk & Neagle
Song Lyrics Title : The Twenty-First Time
Taken from Album : The Twenty-First Time
Nowhere to live, nowhere to fall
He used to have money, but he’s wasted it all.
His face is a photograph burned in my mind,
but I pretend not to see him for the twenty-first time
He sleeps under stars, that’s all he can afford
His blanket’s an old coat he’s had since the war
He stands on the corner of Carter and Vine
But I pretend not to see him for the twenty-first time
He may be a drifter, he’s grown old and gray
But what if he’s Jesus and I walk away?
I say I’m the body and drink of the wine
but I pretend not to see him for the twenty-first time
She’s twenty-nine but she feels forty-eight
She can’t raise three kids on minimum wage
She’s cryin’ in back of the welfare line
but I pretend not to see her for the twenty-first time
She may be a stranger tryin’ to get through the day
but what if it’s Jesus and I walk away?
I say I’m the body and drink of the wine
but I pretend not to see her for the twenty-first time
This is a call for a change in my heart
I realize that I’ve not been doin’ my part
when I needed a Savior, I found it in Him
He gave to me, now I’ll give back to them
Drifter or stranger, father or son
I’ll look for Jesus in every one
’cause I am the body and drink of the wine
and I’m thankful there’s more than the twenty-first time

Read Luke 10: 25-37
Who are you more like the priest, Levite, or Samaritan?

Day 2
25 One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”
27 The man answered, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ Luke 10:25-27

Have you ever given thought to your love for the Lord? How much do you love Him? Consider these areas that Jesus questioned the expert in the law about.
What does it mean to love the Lord with all your heart?

What does it mean to love the Lord with all your soul?

What does it mean love the Lord with all your strength?

What does it mean to love the Lord with all of your mind?

Which areas do you need to work on?

Day 3
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Growing up in church I know that I grew up hearing this all of my life. But I never really thought about all of the implications of this. Have you ever thought about how much you love yourself? Is it possible to love someone else if you do not love yourself? If you do not love yourself what would love for another look like?
God created you to be unique (read Psalms 139). He spent a great deal of time putting you together. He has spent all of these years protecting you and he died for you. In other words you mean a great deal to the God of all creation. To see yourself as something less than what God created you to be is a sin. When you see yourself as less than what God created you to be will destroy your ability to really love others.

Do you want to love others as yourself?

If you really love others the way you love yourself, what will it look like?

Day 5

If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a Christian brother or sister,[a] that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? 1 John 4:20
What does this verse say about how your relationship with God is affected by your relationship with others?

What are the implications that this has on people that you come in contact with at school?

Is there a person or group that you have hated that you need to confess before God? If so write out the names?

4. Pray that God will help you to love others the way he loves them?

DEVOTIONS
Day 6
33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins,[e] telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ Luke 10:33-35
What does it mean to show compassion? What does it look like? If you look at verses like Mark 1:40-42 or Matthew 9:33-38 or Matthew 10:1-42 you see that when Jesus was moved by compassion it brought about a turning point in a persons life. Compassion moved Jesus to take action that affected the lives of those whose needs moved him. Compassion is love moved to action. See what the Samaritan did for the traveler. The loving compassion of one person literally changed the life of another.
When was the last time you were moved to act on the needs of another?

When was it?
Should this happen on a daily basis? If so what is keeping it from happening?

DEVOTIONS
Day 7

36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.
37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”
Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” Luke 10:36-37

This week you have studied what it means to be a neighbor. This is not just a great idea. It is something that God commanded you to do. The Book of James says that faith without works is dead, and in this passage Jesus tells this teacher of the law that his relationship with God is tied to his relationship with others. What has God taught you this week about your own relationships? What areas do you need to work on? What person or group do you need to show more compassion to? In the space below write down theses things.
